Plastics we machine

We CNC machine practically any machinable engineering plastic, from UHMW and acetal to PEEK and Ultem, plus aluminum, brass and bronze. If the grade isn’t on your drawing, we’ll suggest suitable plastics with your quote.

Choosing a plastic

Choose by what the part has to handle

The common choices for each condition, as general guidance. If your drawing already specifies a grade, we machine to it.

Food and detection

Parts for food, beverage and pharmaceutical equipment.

Common choices

  • UHMW Available in food-contact grades and metal-detectable grades. UHMW page
  • Acetal Available in food-contact grades and detectable grades. Acetal page
  • Detectable grades Metal- and X-ray-detectable versions of common plastics, so stray fragments can be found. Detectable plastics page

Food-contact compliance comes with the material grade and its supplier documentation. Tell us the requirement and we’ll suggest suitable grades.

Precision in plastic

Why the plastic sets the tolerance

±0.002"–±0.005" On critical dimensions, depending on the plastic

Plastics expand with heat, and some take on moisture. Where a part lands in our range depends largely on which plastic it’s made from.

  1. Holds size well

    • Acetal
    • PET
    • PEEK
    • Ultem
    • PPS

Low moisture uptake and low expansion. Usually the first suggestion when a drawing has tight fits.

  2. Moves with moisture or stress

    • Nylon
    • Polycarbonate
    • Acrylic

Nylon takes on moisture and grows slightly. Polycarbonate and acrylic can carry stress from the stock.

  3. Soft or high expansion

    • UHMW
    • HDPE
    • PTFE
    • Polypropylene

Expand more with temperature and give under load, so they tend to sit toward the wider end of the range.

We allow for how each plastic behaves, choose the stock form to suit the part, and confirm the critical dimensions with your quote.

Soft metals

Aluminum, brass and bronze

We machine aluminum, brass and bronze alongside our plastic work. Most are standalone parts, and some are machined to assemble with plastic components.

That’s common with worn or obsolete parts. Send the part or photos, and tell us what it does and what it runs against. We’ll suggest suitable plastics with your quote.

Delrin is a brand of acetal homopolymer. Acetal copolymer, sold under names such as Celcon, is the other common type. If your drawing specifies one, we machine to it.

Yes. Teflon is a brand name for PTFE. If your drawing calls for a specific PTFE grade, we machine to it.
