PTFE machining

Custom PTFE (Teflon®) parts CNC machined to your drawing or sample: valve seats, gaskets, bushings, wear rings and more. Machined in our Aurora, Illinois shop.

PTFE at a glance

Full name
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
Also called
Teflon®, fluoropolymer
Known for
Resisting almost all chemicals, very low friction and a wide temperature range
Under load
Soft, and slowly deforms under constant load (cold flow)
Grades
Virgin, and glass-, carbon- and bronze-filled

Where PTFE works, and where another plastic may suit

General guidance on how PTFE behaves. If your drawing specifies a PTFE grade, we machine to it.

Where it works

Chemicals
Resists almost all acids, alkalis and solvents.
Low friction
Among the lowest friction of any plastic, and almost nothing sticks to it.
Temperature range
Works from very cold to high heat, beyond most plastics.
Insulation
An excellent electrical insulator.
Water
Takes on almost no water.
Weather
Unaffected by sunlight and weather.

Where another plastic may suit

Where another plastic may suit
If the part needs Often used instead
Constant load or tight fits PTFE slowly deforms under constant load. Filled grades resist this better, and PEEK far better.
Stiffness PTFE is soft and flexible. PVDF keeps strong chemical resistance and is much stiffer.
Abrasive wear Virgin PTFE wears quickly against abrasive material. UHMW lasts much longer.
Milder chemicals at lower cost PTFE is one of the costlier plastics. For milder chemicals, these cost less.

Precision in PTFE

How we machine PTFE

±0.002"–±0.005" On critical dimensions, depending on the plastic

PTFE is soft and expands more with heat than most plastics, so it usually sits toward the wider end of our range. We confirm the critical dimensions with your quote.

  1. Heat

PTFE expands more with heat than most plastics, and cutting heat moves it.

We use sharp tooling and light cuts, and confirm the critical dimensions with your quote.

  2. Clamping

PTFE is soft, so heavy clamping can distort a part while it’s cut.

We hold parts lightly and evenly so they come off the machine at size.

  3. Edges and faces

Soft cut edges can leave burrs on sealing faces and bores.

We deburr edges and leave clean sealing faces and bores.

Grades

PTFE grades

PTFE comes as virgin and filled grades. Name the grade on your drawing, or tell us how the part runs and we’ll suggest one.

PTFE grades
Grade Typically used for
Virgin Chemical, food and pharmaceutical parts, and seals where purity matters.
Glass-filled Less cold flow and better wear than virgin, for seats, seals and bushings.
Carbon-filled Wear rings, bearings and seals, including some that run without lubrication.
Bronze-filled Bushings and wear parts under higher load, where chemical resistance matters less.
Mechanical (reprocessed) Lower-cost parts where purity and color matter less.
Metal-detectable Food and pharmaceutical lines where stray fragments must be found. Detectable plastics

Buyer questions

PTFE FAQs

Yes. Teflon® is a brand name for PTFE. If your drawing says Teflon, we machine it in PTFE. CDS isn’t affiliated with the trademark owner.

Virgin PTFE has no filler and is the purest grade, common for chemical, food and pharmaceutical parts. Glass, carbon and bronze fillers make PTFE stiffer and more wear resistant and reduce cold flow, but each changes its other properties differently. We machine whichever grade your drawing names, or suggest one with your quote.

PTFE is soft, and under constant load it slowly deforms, which is called cold flow. A seat or gasket held under load for years can flatten and stop sealing. Filled grades resist cold flow better than virgin PTFE. Send the old part or the drawing, and we’ll make the replacement.

Yes. We supply PTFE sheet and rod, cut to size when you need it, through our material supply service.
