Roller anatomy

A roller is four parts working together

When a roller fails, it’s usually one of these. Knowing which one tells us what the replacement needs.

DIAGRAM: roller section, shell, bore, bearing and shaft labeled; live vs dead shaft
  • Live shaft

The shaft turns with the roller, on bearings in the frame.

  • Dead shaft

The shaft is fixed in the frame; the roller spins on bearings inside it.

Roller parts, what to tell us and common failures
PartTell usCommon failure
01 Shell Outside diameter, wall or inside diameter, face length and profile. Wears through, flat-spots or starts marking product.
02 Bore and bearing seat The bearing or bushing size, and how it’s held in. The seat wears and the bearing spins in the bore.
03 Bearing or bushing Type and size, sealed or open, or a plain bushing. Grit gets in and it seizes. The stopped roller then drags and damages the belt.
04 Shaft and ends Live or dead shaft, diameter, end shape and frame width. Rusts, or bends over a long span.

Shell only or complete roller? We machine the roller and can assemble it with its bearings or bushings, and machine aluminum, brass or bronze parts where the design calls for them. Tell us what you need. Assembly service

Configurations

Roller shapes we machine

Common shapes are below. If yours is different, send the drawing or the old roller.

  • DIAGRAM: straight roller

    Straight

    01

A plain cylinder for general conveying.

  • DIAGRAM: crowned roller

    Crowned

    02

Slightly larger in the middle to help a belt track centered.

  • DIAGRAM: tapered roller

    Tapered

    03

Narrower at one end, for curved conveyor sections.

  • DIAGRAM: grooved roller

    Grooved

    04

Grooves for round products or round drive belts.

  • DIAGRAM: sprocketed roller

    Sprocketed

    05

Sprocket teeth machined on the roller for positive chain drive.

Any other shape, to your drawing or worn sample.

Long rollers and thin walls

Span and wall decide how much it sags

A longer unsupported span bends far more under the same load, and a thin wall adds to it. On long plastic rollers that can mean sag, poor tracking or bearings pushed out of line.

  • Face length and support points
  • Load and how it’s spread
  • Outside diameter and wall
  • How much sag is acceptable

Send these with your drawing. We machine the roller to the wall, diameter and plastic it calls for, and if the plastic is open, we’ll suggest suitable plastics.

Switching from steel?

Plastic or steel rollers

Plastic suits many conveyor rollers, but not every one. Load, span, speed and heat all matter.

Where plastic helps

No rust in washdown
Plastic doesn’t corrode in wet, washdown or chemical service.
Lighter
Easier to handle, and less weight for the frame and bearings to carry.
Gentler on product
A softer contact surface that’s less likely to mark product.
Quieter
Plastic rollers generally run quieter than steel.
Plastic bushings
Self-lubricating bushings can replace greased bearings in some rollers.

Where steel may stay the right choice

Heavy or concentrated loads
High point loads can dent or flat-spot a plastic shell.
Long spans
Plastic bends more than steel, so long rollers can sag.
High heat
Heat can soften some plastics or change their size.
High speeds
Fast rollers build heat at the bearing and shell.

±0.005"

On critical dimensions, depending on the plastic. Specs and CAD files are kept, so a reorder matches the last batch.

  • Turned, then milled

CNC turned so the roller runs true, with sprocket teeth, grooves and flats milled where needed.

It can help. A softer contact surface is gentler on product, but marking also depends on load, speed, contamination and the product itself. Tell us what’s being marked and how.

Your design sets the span, wall and load, and we machine the roller to your drawing. Include the load and span with your request so we can suggest suitable plastics.

Yes. Detectable acetal is a common choice for rollers on lines with metal or X-ray inspection. Metal- and X-ray-detectable grades work with different systems, so tell us which your line uses.

We hold ±0.002" to ±0.005" on critical dimensions, depending on the plastic. We review your drawing and confirm the critical dimensions, such as the bearing bore, with your quote.

Yes. Specifications and CAD files are kept for future orders, and reorders use a shorter form.

Timing depends on the roller, plastic and quantity, and comes with your quote. For an emergency breakdown, ask about our expedited service.
