Where PSU works, and where another plastic may suit
General guidance on how PSU behaves. If your drawing specifies a PSU grade or Udel®, we machine to it.
Where it works
- Steam
- Takes hot water, steam and repeated sterilization.
- Clarity
- See-through amber, so you can see what’s inside the part.
- Toughness
- Tough and rigid, and takes everyday knocks.
- Insulation
- A good electrical insulator that stays stable as temperatures change.
Where another plastic may suit
| If the part needs | Often used instead |
|---|---|
| Solvents Some solvents can crack PSU. These resist them. | |
| Sliding wear PSU isn’t a bearing plastic. These run against shafts and slides. | |
| More steam cycles For parts sterilized over and over, PPSU lasts longer. |
Grades
PSU grades
PSU comes unfilled and glass-filled. Name the grade on your drawing, or tell us how the part is used and we’ll suggest one.
| Grade | Typically used for |
|---|---|
| Unfilled | Manifolds, covers and see-through parts. |
| Glass-filled | Stiffer parts that hold close size, such as housings and brackets. |
| PPSU | For tougher parts that are sterilized often. PPSU |
| Polycarbonate | When the part doesn’t see steam, at lower cost. Polycarbonate |
