Acetal machining
Custom acetal (Delrin®) parts CNC machined to your drawing or sample: bushings, gears, rollers, pistons and more. Machined in our Aurora, Illinois shop.
Acetal at a glance
- Full name
- Polyoxymethylene (POM)
- Also called
- Delrin®, POM-C, POM-H
- Known for
- Stiffness, low friction and holding size
- In water
- Absorbs little water, so sizes stay stable
- Grades
- Copolymer, homopolymer, filled, food-contact and more
Parts in acetal
Acetal parts we machine
The parts we see most often in acetal, and why it suits each job. We machine any acetal part to your drawing or sample, listed here or not.
- Bushings photo
Bushings
Stiff and low-friction for running against shafts without grease.
- Timing gears photo
Timing gears
Stiff, quiet teeth that hold their profile.
- Rollers photo
Rollers
A hard, smooth surface that stays round.
- Pistons photo
Pistons
Holds size, so grooves and bores stay where the drawing puts them.
- Plungers photo
Plungers
Stiff and slick for sliding in a bore.
- Spools photo
Spools
Machines cleanly into fine lands and grooves.
- Spacers photo
Spacers
Stiff and stable, so it holds its length.
- Washers photo
Washers
Thin sections that stay flat and true.
- Housings photo
Housings
Clean bores, pockets and threads in one stable part.

Where acetal works, and where another plastic may suit
General guidance on how acetal behaves. If your drawing names acetal or Delrin®, we machine to it. Compare UHMW and acetal Compare acetal and nylon
Where it works
- Stiffness
- One of the stiffest and strongest unfilled plastics.
- Holds size
- Low moisture uptake and stable when machined, so parts stay to size.
- Low friction
- Slides smoothly and resists wear in moving parts.
- Fatigue
- Takes repeated loading well, as in gear teeth that mesh all day.
- Fine detail
- Machines cleanly into threads, small bores and gear teeth.
- Food lines
- Available in food-contact and metal-detectable grades.
Where another plastic may suit
| If the part needs | Often used instead |
|---|---|
| Heavy abrasion or impact Under abrasive sliding and hard knocks, UHMW usually outlasts it. | |
| Strong acids or chlorine Strong acids and oxidizers, including chlorine, attack acetal. | |
| Higher temperatures Its heat limit is moderate. | |
| The lowest friction Acetal is slick, but PTFE is slicker and non-stick. |
Grades
Acetal grades
Acetal comes as copolymer, homopolymer and filled grades. Name the grade on your drawing, or tell us how the part runs and we’ll suggest one.
| Grade | Typically used for |
|---|---|
| Copolymer (POM-C) | General machined parts. The most common choice, and consistent through thick rod and plate. |
| Homopolymer (Delrin®, POM-H) | Parts that need slightly more stiffness and strength. |
| PTFE-filled | Lower friction and wear in bushings and sliding parts. |
| Glass-filled | Extra stiffness, and less growth with heat. |
| Food-contact grades | Parts that touch food. Compliance comes with the grade’s supplier documentation. |
| Metal-detectable | Food and pharmaceutical lines where stray fragments must be found. Detectable plastics |
| UV-stabilized | Black grades for parts used in sunlight. |

All plastics we machineDelrin® is a well-known brand of acetal homopolymer, and many buyers use the name for any acetal. If your drawing specifies Delrin, we machine the part in Delrin. If it says acetal, copolymer is the usual choice. Delrin® is a registered trademark; CDS is not affiliated with its owner.
Homopolymer is slightly stiffer and stronger. Copolymer is more stable in hot water and many chemicals, and is consistent through thick stock. Both machine well. We machine whichever your drawing names, or suggest one with your quote.
Food-contact grades of acetal are widely used in food processing equipment. Compliance comes with the specific grade and its supplier documentation, so tell us the requirement and we’ll suggest suitable grades.
Yes. We supply acetal sheet and rod, cut to size when you need it, through our material supply service.
